Lychoservices

Le patrimoine luminaire en ligne

LychnoServices is a cultural project initiated in 2002. This project aims to promote the heritage of ancient lighting devices in all its forms, from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.

LychnoServices was created to satisfy a request coming both from the scientific world and the wider community of antiquities lovers and collectors.

Every single museum, excavation or archaeological collection has several lamps or candleholders listed in its inventory.

Like coins, oil lamps are considered by scientists to be among the most relevant objects when it comes to the chronological dating of an archaeological complex or site.

In spite of the high frequency of discoveries and the numerous specialized publications on lighting devices (more than one hundred papers and half a dozen books per year), no synthesis has never been made in this field. Reduced to a mere digression within associations, congresses and publications on ceramics and bronzes, information related to this category of artefacts remains difficult to obtain for the public, researchers and collectors.

LychnoServices displays a range of tools to stimulate more active cultural exchanges in this field, offering four means of information detailed in its website:
